51st GEF Council Meeting

On Tuesday, 25 October 2016, Naoko Ishii, GEF CEO and Chairperson, opened the 51st meeting of the GEF Council with the launch of the publication ‘25 Years of the GEF’ outlining the GEF’s accomplishments over the past 25 years and the way forward. Carlos Raul Delgado (Mexico, Council Member for the constituency of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and Venezuela) was elected Co-Chair for the 51st meeting of the GEF Council.

Among the agenda items of the Council Meeting the following were discussed: the Annual Portfolio Monitoring Report 2016 and the updated GEF Corporate Scorecard; Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) report; update on the projected resource availability from the sixth replenishment of the GEF Trust Fund (GEF-6); work program for the GEF Trust Fund; seventh replenishment of the GEF Trust Fund (GEF-7); and an update on the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency (CBIT).

During the day, the UN Development Programme (UNDP) and the GEF also launched two publications: ‘Voices of Impact: Speaking for the Global Commons,’ and ‘Silent Roar: UNDP and GEF in the Snow Leopard Landscape.’     More on the first day of Council via@IISD

On Wednesday, 26 October 2016, among the agenda items of the Council Meeting the following were discussed: Monitoring agency compliance with GEF policies on environmental and social safeguards, gender, and fiduciary standards, Semi-Annual Evaluation Report October 2016 and the related Management responseRelations with the conventions and other international institutions.   More on the second day of Council via@IISD

On the final day of the GEF Council meeting, Council members adopted decisions on recommendations of the Working Group on Public Involvement, and on monitoring agency compliance with GEF policies. The Council also set up an Ad Hoc Working Group to produce a draft policy on ethics and conflict of interest for Council members, following recommendations by Transparency International (TI) and, at the conclusion of the meetings, approved the GEF Joint Summary of the ChairsMore on the third day of Council via@IISD

21st LDCF/SCCF Council Meeting

During the 21st LDCF/SCCF Council Meeting, council members considered the LDCF and SCCF progress report. At the conclusion of the meeting they approved the LDCF/SCCF Joint Summary of the Chairs.

GEF Council Consultation meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs)

The GEF Council Consultation meeting with Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) took place on 24 October 2016, the day before the opening of the 51st meeting of the GEF Council. The CSO consultation included a dialogue with the GEF CEO and Chairperson Naoko Ishii, and discussions on: strengthening CSO engagement in the GEF; the role CSOs play in the GEF through the GEF-CSO Network; and CSOs’ vision for the seventh replenishment of the GEF Trust Fund (GEF-7). More on the CSO consultation via @IISD
