The United Nations Climate Change Conference -COP14

December 1, 2008 to December 12, 2008

The 14th Conference of the Parties (COP 14) to the UNFCCC, along with the 4th Session of the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, takes place December 1-12, 2008, in Poznan, Poland.

The Conference is the most prestigious forum of political discussion in the scope of climate protection, attracting the attention of the entire world. The Conference is organized by the Secretariat of the UNFCCC and hosted by the government of the Republic of Poland.

The two-week sessions are attended by approximately 8,000 participants, including more than 190 government delegations headed by the Ministers for the Environment or Climate Change; international institutions; environmental, business, and research organizations, nongovernmental organizations and media.

The UNFCCC Conference 2008 comes midway between the COP 13 in Bali, which saw the launch of negotiations on strengthened international action on climate change, and COP 15 Copenhagen, at which the negotiations are set to conclude.

The GEF as an operating entity of the financial mechanism of the UNFCCC will report on its activities related to climate change over the last year. In the area of mitigation through the trust fund the GEF has provided finance for 39 projects worth US$195 million.

Five adaptation projects worth US$29.4 million have been financed through the Special Climate Change Fund. These projects have generated US$139.1 million in co-financing.

Through the Least Developed Country Fund, the GEF has provided funding for seven projects and four enabling activities totaling US25.2 million. In addition the GEF will present a US$50 million program to scale up the level of investment for technology transfer to developing countries.

As Secretariat for the Adaptation Fund of the UNFCCC, the GEF also participate in discussions on the issues related to the management and governance of the fund.

Several are the side-events organized by the GEF. The entire GEF schedule is available on the right.
