2010 Biodiversity Indicators Partnership www.twentyten.net
The 2010 Biodiversity Indicators Partnership is a global initiative to track progress toward achieving the "2010 biodiversity target" to significantly reduce the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010. The Partnership is a collaboration among the many organizations and agencies developing global biodiversity indicators and is the leading source of information on trends in global biodiversity.
Protected Areas - www.protectedareas.org
The CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas (PoWPA), adopted by the 7th CBD Conference of Parties in 2004, is a global action plan to addressing the following: help for the ecological gap analysis; reviewing and revising forms of conservation applied at PAs; integrating PAs in wider landscape; promoting co-management, private Pas, and similar innovative governance models; tackling legal problems; undertaking monetary valuation of PA resources and services; tackling perverse incentives and establishing positive ones; establishing innovative funding mechanisms; PA training programs; and devising systems to monitor PA management effectiveness. The project gives priority to Small Island Development States (SIDS) and Least Developed Countries (LDCs). The project was launched in 2007, and the first grantwas distributed in October 2007. By January 2009, US$7.9 million was committed by the project to 47 countries as a result of five public application rounds. Grant approvals were made by the International Technical Review Committee (ITRC), composed of volunteer members from the GEF Secretariat, CBD, UNDP, UNEP/WCMC, World Bank, TNC, WWF, IUCN-WCPA, and the GEF Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel.
Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund (CEPF)
Founded in 2000, the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund is a global leader in enabling civil society to participate in and benefit from conserving some of the world’s most critical ecosystems. Grants are provided for nongovernmental and private sector organizations to help protect biodiversity hotspots, Earth’s most biologically rich, yet threatened areas. Grant recipients range from small farming cooperatives and community associations to private sector partners and international organizations.
Millennium Ecosystem Assessment - www.millenniumassessment.org
The Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) was called for by the United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 2000. Initiated in 2001, the objective of the MA was to assess the consequences of ecosystem change for human well-being and the scientific basis for action needed to enhance the conservation and sustainable use of those systems and their contribution to human well-being. The MA has involved the work of more than 1,360 experts worldwide. Their findings provide a state-of-the-art scientific appraisal of the condition and trends in the world’s ecosystems and the services they provide (such as clean water, food, forest products, flood control, and natural resources) and the options to restore, conserve, or enhance the sustainable use of ecosystems.
