| Description | The purpose of the project is to provide farmers, institutes and local communities with knowledge, methodology and policies to conserve globally significant in situ/on-farm horticultural crops and wild fruit species in Central Asia. This will contribute to achieving sustainable agricultural development, food security and environmental stability. The project has a particular focus on traditional local varieties of fruit crops maintained by farmers and their wild relatives growing in forests, and on the enhancement of farmers' and community capacities to conserve in situ horticulture diversity. |
| Implementation Status | Collaborative agreements are signed in all partner countries except Tajikistan. The legal framework related to conservation of wild fruit species and supporting individual farmers in local Agrobiodiversity management has being reviewed in all countries. Assessment of extent and level of diversity of target crops and associated traditional knowledge is started. Key farmers whose nurseries will be used for multiplication of local fruit crops varieties and wild fruit species promising forms are identified and sites for demonstration plots are selected. All countries agreed to use the same information system format for gathered data. National partners are trained on project impact assessment. Establishment of Multidisciplinary Site Committees to facilitate participation of farmers and local authorities in the project implementation is ongoing. Public awareness on local agrobiodiversity importance is increased through dissemination of leaflets, TV and radio broadcasting. Regional Annual Meetings of National Focal Points for Public Awareness and Information and Communication were organized on 9-11 January 2007 at Regional PIU (Tashkent, Uzbekistan). Workplans for PA and ICT activities were developed and agreed at the meeting. |
