DescriptionThe project’s global objective is to achieve GHG reductions through the alleviation of policy, information, institution capacity and financing barriers that currently hinder renewable energy technology dissemination and market development in Nicaragua. The Development Objective is to create a mechanism to focus and heighten the government commitment to extend electrification services in a sustainable manner as an engine for economic growth with social equity.
Implementation StatusJan-Mar 2007: Completion of construction of first three Small Hydroelectric Plants (SHPs) continues, with administration of six simultaneous contracts. Bilampí SHP is operating. Its inauguration was attended by government, UNDP and SDC officials. Civil works and pipe installation in Río Bravo SHP are in the final phase and installation of electromechanical equipment will be complete in June. El Naranjo SHP procurement processes have begun. There is significant progress in Watershed Sustainable Management and Consumer Education Campaign activities. Many local training activities were conducted. The Distribution Concessions for three SHPs have been approved by the Ministry. The report and documentary have been done on the systematization.
