| Description | The project aims to protect a representative sample of the biodiversity of the Central Saharan region. This will be achieved through the conservation and sustainable use of globally significant biodiversity in the Tassili N'Ajjer and the Ahaggar National Parks. Given the vastness of the two protected areas and the specificity of desert ecosystems, a mixed strategy will be adopted. In sites of key biodiversity resources, more intensive management will be supported through the clustering of activities while, over the rest of the area, a more extensive form of management will be supported through simplified streams of activity – intervention being limited in some cases to supporting PAMU presence. Priority will also be given to ecological corridors in order to ensure at least stepping-stone connectivity between areas of key resources. This adaptive management strategy, emphasizing flexibility and movement, is tailored to the ecological imperatives of desert ecosystems, as reflected by the survival strategies and movement patterns adopted by both animals and humans in such extreme environments. |
| Implementation Status | The project is under implementation since 2006. The improved rating of the project in the last PIR reflects overall progress in the area of capacity building, and the strong commitment by the Ministry of Culture to urgently tackle issues limiting community participation. An internal mid term evaluation of the project was conducted at a workshop in July including all key project stakeholders. An outline proposal for a new legal instrument defining the “Plan Général d’Aménagement” for Cultural Parks in Algeria has been developed by an especially established Task force. The bulk of the government’s co financing commitments has been successfully delivered. Two critical workshops are being planned for the month of October 2007 to leverage technical and financial resources at regional level for sustainable livelihood activities in the two parks. The workshops are expected to include participants from all the involved government departments and are also intended to mobilize future investments towards the second phase of the project. |
