| Description | The overall development objectives of the proposed MRMP II is the conservation, rehabilitation and sustainable utilization of natural resources in the dryland areas of the NWCZ of Egypt through the implementation of an ecologically , socially and economically sustainable operation of biodiversity for the benefit of the local population. The project will integrate watershed management with community-based and demand driven approaches to socioeconomic development. It will be achieved by: (a)assisting communities, including women and the poor, to organize themselves and participate in community-based planning and implementation of development activities; (b)assisting communities to conserve, rehabilitate and sustainably manage the natural resource base through developing appropriate community-based institutional processes and mechanisms; (c)improving small holder sustainable agriculture, horticulture and livestock production; (d)promoting demand-driven non-farm income generating activities, mainly targeting women; and (e)providing improved access to technical, financial and commercial services and market linkages. |
| Implementation Status | Project has been approved for Work Program entry on May 15, 2002. Appraisal mission scheduled June 15, 2002 and Board Presentation December 12, 2002. PAD was completed on February 6, 2003 and Bank Approval was obtained on March 6, 2003. The last site visit was on October 5, 2004. A second extension of the effectiveness date until December 2004 was granted based on GOE's request, in view of delay in parliamentary ratification process. The loan for the project to which this GEF project is attached has been cancelled upon request from the Egyptian government. |
