| Description | The project will provide core strategic support to strengthen the system of national protected areas in Zambia. Interventions have been strategically designed, taking into account the afore-mentioned country context and strategies and identified barriers, to accelerate and fortify efforts in support of this objective. GEF funding through this project would support capacity building activities focused at the systemic and institutional levels, PA system reclassification, and demonstration of new management partnership models at two field demonstration sites. The field sites are the Bangweulu complex on the southern margins of the Bangweulu Wetlands (incorporating parts of Kasanka NP, Lavushi Manda NP, Bangweulu GMA, Chikuni GMA and Kafinda GMA), and the Chiawa/Lower Zambezi complex in southeastern Zambia (incorporating parts of Lower Zambezi NP and Chiawa GMA) . Co-financing, provided by the GRZ, NORAD, DANIDA and other donors will strengthen management of a core set of high profile National Parks, that will serve as the main engine of tourism growth, and long-term anchor for the PA System. |
| Implementation Status | The main purpose of the project is to strengthen the enabling frameworks and capacities for managing the National Protected Areas System. The project will put in place appropriate policy, regulatory and governance frameworks in order to provide new tools for public/community/private/civil society management partnerships. The project is closely tied to the Zambia Poverty Reduction Strategy, which identifies tourism, based on the country’s wildlife assets to be the second most important growth sector for the country. It has reviewed all policy documents and legislation concerning natural resource management in Zambia and documented all policies and legislation concerning protected areas in a concise report. Concept papers were produced on two new protected area categories for Zambia. In addition the Project produced a Management Development Training Needs Analysis of the Zambia Wildlife Authority and Terms of Reference for a Management Development Training programme. The project developed the concept and strategy for the establishment of a “community national park” in the eastern part of the Chiawa Game Management Area. |
