| Description | The objective of the project is to protect and manage for sustainable use, globally significant wetland biodiversity in a threatened ecoregion of Argentina, with full participation of local stakeholders. Project activities include: (a) Bioregional management plan; (b) Policy and regulatory reforms and incentive systems; (c) Management of threatened and endangered native species; (d) Land acquisition program; (e) Awareness raising, environmental education, and information dissemination program; (f) Capacity building and training for local stakeholders, and (g) Sustainable productive activities and coordinated ecotourism strategy. |
| Implementation Status | April-June 2005: The first draft of the Management Plan was completed this trimester and is currently being validated amongst key stakeholders, including the communities surrounding Esteros, the Legislative Chamber, the National Institute of Water and Environment, Northeast University, the community of Mercedes and members of its Rural Society. Some resistance was encountered from the productive sector, as expected. A government resolution establishing tourist entrance fees for Provincial Reserves was approved and there are new ecotourism-related projects promoted by this project underway in Paraje Galarza. To promote sustainable economic activities in the area, 25 proposals for small business start ups have been approved by the provincial authorities and are now under consideration of the national authorities (Ministry of Social Development). The mid term evaluation is programmed for June |
