| Description | The objective of the project is to protect the Atiquipa and Taimara ecosystem and its attendant biodiversity through effective conservation and sustainable management in collaboration with stakeholders. The project will specifically attempt to do this through enhancement of the capacity of communities to manage natural resources, establishment of community managed protected areas, restoration of three forest sites. |
| Implementation Status | The project, signed on April 1st 2002, is due to finalize in June 2006. To date 250 ha of the Lomas de Atiquipa are under strict protection (against a baseline starting value of 0) corresponding to 1.5% more than the amount expected at this point in implementation. Cattle rearing practices, which constituted the main threat to this fragile ecosystem, have adopted intensified BD friendly measures which have drastically reduced the erosion and compaction problems evidenced prior to project operations. In addition there are now 1110 ha of Lomas forests under strict conservation status, corresponding to 100% of the goal initially set out by the project. Community leaders have approved the management plan for the area which has been prepared in a highly participatory manner. Compliance is high with relation to precautionary measures and restrictions provided by the Plan reflecting the high ownership reflected by the community. The workplan for 2006 should be prepared between October and November of this year. |
