| Description | GOAL: Strengthening Romania’s national system of protected areas by disseminating lessons and good practices extracted from the Maramures demonstration of an effective protected area model. Objective: The biodiversity of Maramures Mountains Natural Park in Romania's Northern Carpathian Mountains is effectively conserved by adopting an effective protected area management model. |
| Implementation Status | The field staff was fully equipped and the last newsletter was published. In cooperation with WWF, a documentary film on the importance of fresh water was developed. The project manager attended The International Seminar on Protected Area Management. The second biodiversity inventory field campaign was completed; final reports are to be delivered. The national ecological contest “Together for nature” enhancing awareness on the Park was organized. Three proposals were submitted to the Environment Protection Agency, for financing under EU Structural Funds. GEF Mid Term Evaluation was conducted; GIS expert, recruited as a volunteer, developed the GIS tourist map of the Repedea Valley. The landscape ecologist conducted a field trip setting the next steps for the park zoning. The construction of the first mountain cabin commenced; completion is expected by end of year. |
