| Description | This grant is a fully blended within the IFAD-funded loan entitled, “Mount Kenya East Pilot Project for Natural Resource Management (MKEPP).”The development goal of this grant is to ensure equitable and sustainable use of nature resources for sustainable poverty reduction. The specific environmental objective is to improve conservation; management and sustainable use of biological resources in the protected areas of Mt. Kenya National Park and Forest Reserve while at the same time ensure equitable and sustainable use of natural resources by farmers in the agricultural areas. The intermediate purpose is to involve all stakeholders in improving biodiversity conservation and enhancing management through: (a) support for community-based water resource management along ecological boundaries, (b) implementing measures to address land degradation on community trust lands and farm plots; (c) improving sustainable on-farm food production and promotion of on- and off-farm income-generating activities together with protection from wildlife |
| Implementation Status | Project grant under implementation. Grant Agreement between IFAD and Government of Kenya was signed on 03NOV06, declared effective on 16MAR07 and a start up workshop was held on 13-14 JUN07. The following activities have been undertaken: - preparatory meetings between the MKEPP agencies, IFAD, KWS (national implementing agency), UNOPS (cooperating agency) and the PMU; - annual work plan and budget prepared and revised; - project team selected and recruited (complementary to MKEPP PMU); - opening of project bank accounts; - equipment specifications and tender document prepared; - discussions on establishment of M&E system on-going; - first withdrawal application prepared and submitted. Start-up workshop program focused mainly on the institutional arrangements and WP revision, discussing also management and supervision issues (grant administration, procurement, monitoring and evaluation). Activities are being implemented in accordance with the AWP approved. |
