| Description | The overall goal of the proposed project is to mitigate climate change, prevent land degradation, ensure biodiversity conservation, and prevent radioactive pollution by rehabilitating and securing long-term conservation and sustainable use of degraded peatlands in Belarus. |
| Implementation Status | Construction of water-regulating facilities at three project sites (Miranka, Dokudovskoie, Bortenikha) has commenced. Selection of a subcontractor for implementation of construction works at Galoe has been re-announced. Engineering design plan for Ladovo has passed through environmental assessment and has been submitted for technical assessment. The draft Ministry of Forestry sectoral program on peatlands renaturalization was under revision based on the feedback from the ministries of environment and forestry. Competitive bidding for elaboration of design plans for restoration of five project sites (Grichino-Starobinskoe, Osveiskoie, Morochno, Zhada, Obolskoie-1) has started. Subcontractors for scientific research (preparing rationales for restoration of the project sites, creation of integrated system for monitoring of ecosystems, elaboration of method for measurement and study of dynamics of greenhouse gas absorption/emissions from the depleted peatlands) have been selected. |
