DescriptionThis 15 month Enabling Activity will assist the Islamic Republic of Iran to develop a National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (BSAP). Through a participatory process emphasizing workshops and consultations, this project will identify priorities for biodiversity conservation and sustainable use and will elaborate strategies and actions to attain these priorities. The BSAP will build on and reinforce other national strategies and plans such as the National Development Plan and National Environment Strategy. In addition, this project will allow the Islamic Republic of Iran to meet its obligations under the Conservation on Biological Diversity (CBD) in the preparation of its first Country Report to the Conference of the Parties (COP) of the CBD.
Implementation Status The National Report was submitted to the CBD COP 4. The project has developed : a management system for protecting flora and fauna, a grazing management system, an eco-tourism program, settlement enclaves, conservation education programs, training programs, professional level workshops, and for the support of multilateral agencies in biodiversity planning process. The preparation of the GIS data system for monitoring and institutional strengthening is on-going. The project has introduced a healthy environment/ system to protect, conserve and manage the biological resources. By implementing conservation and development activities, strengthening the DNPWC, networking, information sharing, meetings and public participation, the project has created the atmosphere to conserve and safeguard biodiversity resources. Approximately 20 thematic reports have been prepared and are being distilled into the draft strategic action plan, which will be finalized by the extended delivery date of September 2001.
