| Description | Overall Goal: The national protected area system of forest reserves is strengthened through improved incentives for real collaborative forest management with communities. Objective: To demonstrate in three different forest sites that the biodiversity of Kenya’s forest protected area system can be maintained through collaborative management systems using incentives based on income from commercial insects. |
| Implementation Status | First funds were disbursed to the project in December 2004. A Mid-Term Review is scheduled for November 2007. The project is adopting innovative approaches to income generation – butterfly farms and stingless bee honey. What is impressive is the development of a global market, not only a local and national one, for the butterflies and the two types of honey. The stingless bee honey offers particular opportunities in that it has a pharmaceutical application as an anti-bacterial agent. An interesting element of the butterfly growing endeavour is that the ‘traditional’ market for specimens for collectors is growing, but a new emerging market is for live butterflies to be used as a substitute for confetti at weddings. The forest adjacent communities at the three project sites are fully involved in the silk and honey production technologies and their capacity is continually being built for sustainability. |
