| Description | Project would protect and conserve the extent and integrity of remaining forest habitat in Aceh Province through public-private sector collaboration and sustainable use programmes, using elephans as a flagship species. |
| Implementation Status | The overall project implementation was unsatisfactory, primarily based on serious delays in completion of some important activities and late submission of progress and audited financial reports. The security situation in Aceh in early 2003 seemed to have improved and a decision was taken in February 2003 to move the Medan office staff to the Banda Aceh office so that field activities could be undertaken more efficiently. Unfortunately the situation has worsened since May 2003, when the government declared martial law for Aceh province, and field activities were then practically stopped. It is now questionable whether the project will be able to achieve its stated objectives within the project time frame. |
