| Description | This project proposes to address methodologies aimed at optimizing the conservation of biodiversity and the productivity of game ranching systems in Western Africa. It will also proceed with the gradual integration and effective participation of the populations established around a game ranch (Nazinga Game Ranch) into the ranch management operations. In addition, it proposes to set up an infrastructure for applied research and training which will be beneficial to other game ranching projects at the regional level. |
| Implementation Status | Following information received at Headquarters that the execution was experiencing difficulties, an independent evaluation mission was fielded in March 1998. The mission revealed that the project execution was actually satisfactory and that 70% of the activities had been completed in accordance with the initial workplan. The mission also recommended that, in order to attain the objective of biodiversity conservation through game ranching in Western Africa, the project should be refocused through a proper logical framework, the project document re-written and the statute of the Ranch reviewed by the government. These recommendations were accepted by a tripartite revue held in Ouagadougou in June 1998. The project was re-visited and the statute of the Ranch drafted by the government. The implementation of the activities was put on hold in December 1998, and a new logical framework and project document were finalized with some delays in view of the unrest situation in the country. The project document is now being fined tuned and reviewed by the government and it is expected that, further to its approval by all the parties involved, the activities will resume by August 2000. (tm/vg26nov99). In April 2000, the government of Burkina Faso has enacted the Statutes for Nazinga as a Ranch to allow participation of the private sector and the local communities alongside the public sector in the ranching operations.
