| Description | Project initiates full implementation of action plan prepared by IUCN expert group and develops funding plan to ensure rhino conservation strategy's sustainability. Creates databases and analysis of rhino habitat. |
| Implementation Status | Project activities have been completed and will be closed shortly. The project has provided adequate protection of viable populations of one of the rarest mammal species in its native habitat, ensuring long-term survival of the species as an integral component of the Asian rainforest ecosystems and laying a basis for recovery of the population level to the targeted size. Although concentrating on protection of the Sumatran Rhino in Indonesia and Malaysia the project activities in several of the major rainforest conservation areas has contributed significantly to the protection of the rainforest ecosystem. Involvement of local communities in the Rhino protection Programme, and dedicated community outreach programmes in major rhino areas, have contributed to the integration of conservation principles into the local development process. |
