| Description | The project is focused on urgent actions at threatened sites containing globally significant species diversity. These areas are the forerunners of national networks of sites to cover all important and institutional capacity to address these issues. The project structure consists of a government National Coordinator (funded by the governments/Authority and therefore non-GEF funds) responsible for all national aspects of the project; a Local Coordinator for each project site, supported by a local Site Management Committee; a Regional Facilitator, charged with organising the regional aspects of the programme, supported by an international Advisory Committee made up of donors and governments/Authority (represented by the National Cooordinator for each country/authority). |
| Implementation Status | The national project components of Albania, Lebanon, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia are pursuing the implementation of priority actions at the sites: infrastructures for visitors, visibility, and establishment of local management units. The remaining time and resources are used to focus onto the provision of lasting results and tangible biodiversity impacts: in Tunisia and Morocco, a particular emphasis is on revisiting the causes of the pressures upon the areas (assessment mission of GEF/FFEM in June 05 in Tunisia, and study of tourists’ behaviors at the Moulouya site); in Egypt, experts have worked on developing a monitoring program for the sites and prepared a consolidated report in August 2005 that refers to a set of interdisciplinary indicators and measures progress since the year 2000. At the regional level, emphasis has been on documenting lessons learned and processes undertaken within the 6-year life of the project: 1) a management plan peer review initiative, from May to October 2005, has been studying the management plans, visiting the countries, and gathering practitioners at a regional workshop in June 05 in Rabat - a final report is due in October 2005; 2) a socio-economic booklet is being prepared that records the experience of the project - a semi final report will be submitted in September 2005; and 3) a capacity building assessment is being developed. The fifth Regional Advisory Committee of the project (RAC5) will gather all components and partners at the end of September 2005 in Cairo. Two final thematic technical workshops will be scheduled in November and efforts will then be put on consolidating the project results and ensuring sustainability. The project components will complete between end of 2005 and end of 2006. |
