| Description | This project is designed to encourage integration of renewable energy into the government’s national electrification program, and to respond to Operational Program No.6, promoting adoption of renewable energy by removing barriers and reducing implementation costs. The pilot renewable energy schemes include six micro-hydro installations and 20 solar battery charging stations. |
| Implementation Status | Progress has been steady but slower than expected in the last months. The number of subscribers stand now at 4710 with 136 villages. Those operational stand at 3351 with 98 villages. SHS installations dominate the choice of technologies, with village hydro and gensets lagging behind. One factor is the preference of ESCOs for SHS installations. A financial analysis suggests that the return to ESCOs from SHS installations are almost three times those for other technologies, while the investment and operating risks are lower. The original selection of provinces for inclusion in the project were in the drier and sunnier parts of the country favoring SHS use. There has also been a history of unreliable hydro and diesel-based off-grid gensets. |
