| Description | The project focuses on activities that will serve to broaden the number of date palm varieties that will be grown in-situ by comparison to baseline projections, rather than promote higher yields or an expansion of market demand, which are not incremental activities. Project activities are summarised as follows; (1) in-situ pre-screening to make more efficient the process of varietal selection for multiplication; (2) adapting techniques to multiply a greater range of date palm varieties; (3) develop alternative markets for date palm products and create value for a wide range of phenotypic characteristics and the incentive to grow more varieties in-situ; (4) develop national capacity to negotiate genetic property rights concerning win/win partnerships; and (5) replicate project best practices at other sites. |
| Implementation Status | 1.Outcome of the project at the policy level: In Algeria, 20 new varieties of date-palm have been selected to be encouraged. The Government has decided to subsidize their cultivation based on the following criteria (commercial value, stress resilience and endemic/local ). In Tunisia, the Ministry of Environment is going to allocate about 80,000 $ to replicate the project approach on other sites. Based on the results achieved by the project, the Ministry of Agriculture is willing to elaborate a national strategy for the oases. 2.Partnership development with the Tunisian GEF-SGP for two new NGO executed projects (Tataouine and Kerkennah). Two MOU signed between IPGRI and the National Organization for Agriculture and Fishing and the Research and Education Institute on Agriculture. 3.Awareness raising activities: DVD under preparation relating to the project results. Participation of the project team to different regional conferences (Aleppo in April 2005). Presentation of the project objectives and results during a collective wedding ceremony (50 marriages) in Algeria. 4.TPR meeting organized in Morocco in January 2005: all the partners have committed themselves to ensure the continuity of the project activities after its cloture 5.Constitution of a new NGO in Degache (one of the Tunisian project sites) to sustain project activities after its closure. 6.Final evaluation scheduled for October 2005 7.Regional closure workshop planned for December 2005 including presentation of the results of the final evaluation and final TPR. |
