| Description | This project will generate public awareness, increase levels of understanding of global environmental issues and mobilize support in Latin American countries for the objectives of the GEF operational programmes. The result will facilitate broad-based support for these objectives by relating them to the individual concerns of citizens, in order to foster a greater commitment to voluntary action that would be needed to guarantee the sustainability of GEF-funded measures within those programs. This will create an enabling environment for national decision making and action on GEF focal areas. The project will demonstrate the effectiveness in terms of credibility and costs, of developing strategic alliances with civil society groups and NGO networks of political and social influence in order to integrate GEF focal areas into their priorities and communicate these issues through their existing delivery mechanisms. This will be accomplished through capacity building activities with six major networks in accordance with the comparative advantage of each network, in relation to the GEF Operational Programmes, by providing information products, upgrading their communication skills, and basic knowledge of global environmental issues. The six networks selected are: parliamentarians, consumer organizations, local authorities, educators, radio broadcasters, and religious leaders. |
| Implementation Status | Project has had significant implementation delays but is now back on track. The training and capacity building-stages have concluded. The following set of activities were performed from August 2006 to March 2007: development of demonstration activities, evaluation, monitoring, and dissemination. |
