| Description | The project will reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as local environmental contamination through the replacement of incandescent bulbs with fluorescent light bulbs in two major markets: Guadalajara and Monterrey. Project will also work to increase institutional capacity for technological change and energy conservation, and strengthen the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) and its capacity to practice demand side management on a sustainable basis. |
| Implementation Status | Project implementation has been highly satisfactory: activities have been well organized, personnel are well trained and motivated, the CFLs are of high quality and efficiency, and public acceptance has been very positive. All contracts to purchase CFLs with GEF grant funds have been awarded (totaling approximately 1.6 million units). A further bid for 920,000 units took place in 7/97 using funds generated from original sales plus CFE's own funds. Consultants will assist CFE to assess carbon savings based on actual installation and consumer behavior. Project objectives will be met. Sales of CFLs: 2,454,923. |
