| Executing Agency | Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) |
| Description | The project will consist of installing a sufficient number of wind turbines (between 40-100 units) to generate 20 MW at Tejona, near Lake Arenal. In addition to the wind turbines, the project would add a control center for the wind power plant and a connection to the power grid. Through this project, wind power will displace thermal power plants that would otherwise have been built and thereby reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 60,000 tons per year. |
| Implementation Status | The project is fully disbursed from the WB to IDB. As of August 2002, all 30 wind turbine generating units were installed, and except for one, all are operational. The hydraulic pump problem related to this turbine is expected to be corrected soon. The Tejona control center has been installed and the substation at the Tejona Site is expected to be completed by December 2002. Expansion of the Arenal substation, 8 km away, is under construction and is expected to be completed in the following months. The project has closed, however, is waiting for a completion report to be submitted to the WB from the IDB. |
