| Description | The project supports selected conservation activities on the basis of detailed management plans for ten protected area sites. The development and supervi-sion of management plans will be guided by Technical Advisory Committees, composed of representatives of local communities, non-governmental organizations, local governments and other stakeholders. An ecotourism plan will be prepared and implemented in one of the protected area sites on a pilot basis, for potential replication in other areas. An endowment fund will be established to provide stable long-term financing for basic protection and conservation activities in and around the 10 protected areas. |
| Implementation Status | Endowment fund established in July 1997. Five project cycles completed successfully. Mid-term evaluation completed in December 2000. Final evaluation and ICR expected to be completed by December 2003. Grant agreement establishes June 2002 as completion date, but World Bank decided to extend it one year to ensure compatibility with second donation from GEF to protected areas in Mexico (SINAP 2). An ICR was prepared and is being submitted to the Board. |
