| Description | Building on the technological advances gained under the UNDP-implemented Pilot Phase GEF project, a public-private consortium will demonstrate biomass integrated gasification/gas turbine technology for co-generation of electricity at a commercial scale. The 30 MW demonstration plant will run on wood chip fuel from plantation forests. |
| Implementation Status | The project was expected to begin in 2000. However, the original project sponsor, a consortium formed by Eletrobras, CHESF, and Shell of Brazil, with the participation of the Ministry of Science and Technology was dissolved. The Bank and the counterpart team tried unsuccessfully (from about 1999-2003) to identify a new project sponsor. More recently, the government proposed an alternative project which bore little resemblance to the original pipelined project: new sponsor, new technology, different location, different financing. The Bank team informed the Ministry of Planning that the fundamental differences in design were so significant that the proposal would need to be re-submitted to the GEF pipeline. In light of all these changes, Bank management, in consultation with the relevant government ministries, agreed to drop this project. |
