| Description | The goal of the proposed project would be to preserve the biodiversity in the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve buffer and influence zones. The specific project objective would be: to conserve biodiversity and increase habitat in the productive landscape of the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve buffer and influence zones by (i) preserving coffee cultivated under diverse shade trees, (ii) reconverting other coffee production regimes, and (iii) promoting other sustainable production opportunities. |
| Implementation Status | Project implementation is proceeding satisfactorily. Project achieved the initiation of an impressive process of participation by all different levels of project stakeholders. Project developed an effective system of technical support to the coffee producers in the seven producer organizations that focuses on sustainable production methods, coffee quality and commercialization. The project is spearheading a holistic set of Certifiable Sustainability Principles at not just the local but also the national level. A monitoring system of flora and fauna is being developed that is managed by the local communities and develops local capacity and is not too academic in its design and application. The project closed on 9/30/2002 and work on the Completion Report has been initiated. |
