| Description | The project would support protected area (PA) management and natural resource management in the Peruvian Amazon particularly by indigenous peoples. The government is seeking to expand effective forest conservation in the Amazon region to cover approximately 10 percent of the biome through the establishment of up to 9 new protected areas covering at least 5.1 m hectares. The government is also seeking to promote greater involvement of local communities, particularly indigenous peoples, in the direct management of PAs to ensure equitable benefit sharing resulting from the establishment of communal reserves as part of an overall strategy for rural poverty alleviation. |
| Implementation Status | Project implementation is satisfactory. Project is on track to achieve its development objectives; major institutional problems and lack of counterparts resources have been addressed; the Chief of INRENA endorses the project and PIMA Executing Unit has now a more committed and qualified staff. Categorization and draft management plans have been completed for the five NPA. Management Committees to ensure participation of indigenous communities have been established. The change in GEF Trust Fund Denomination from SDR to US Dollars took three months to complete causing disbursements to halt during that time. Disbursements resumed the first week of April. Meanwhile, the project continue to operate using counterparts resources therefore, we expect still to achieve this year goals. |
