| Description | The project will focus on the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity in the Talamanca-Caribbean Biological Corridor, an area encompassing five of the twelve life zones of Costa Rica. It will accomplish this through (i) the protection, preservation and restoration of globally significant ecosystems in the corridor; (ii) adopting and applying improved, biodiversity friendly sustainable forest management practices; (iii) development, management and marketing of local and regional sustainable ecotourism products while increasing tourism-based incomes; and (iv) strengthening local and state run organizations/offices through the development of a co-managament model for the protected areas and corridor project. |
| Implementation Status | The project held a Tripartite review in October 2002, where the workplan for the remaining 6 months of the project was modified in order to maximize the project's benefits as it nears the end of its implementation. Since the Tripartite meeting, the Talamanca region has faced a lot of rain and floods, and an emergency was declared for the region. The rainfall was the heaviest experienced in the last 30 years in the region. The administrative building of the project was destroyed completely, and the project has temporarily stopped its activities in order to assess the situation and take the necessary measures in order to continue the project. The revised workplan needs minor adjustments in order to take into consideration the effects of the rainfall on the project. The project is expected to finish in May 2003. |
