| Description | The proposed MSP project would: develop baseline data on biodiversity and demographic and socioeconomic trends in the Vilcabamba Cordillera area; initiate participatory planning with local stakeholders, govt, oil firms and NGOs to improve local living conditions and start ecological zoning; design and establish permanent protected areas emphasizing an indigenous reserve within the reserved zone; develop a master plan for the area and prepare an investment agenda; initiate productive activities and human service provision (health & education). |
| Implementation Status | Project progress is satisfactory. A six month extension was approved to successfully meet objectives. Consensus on the boundaries and uses of protected areas has been reached and the proposal has been submitted to INRENA for approval. Master plans for the two communal reserves are completed and submitted. Communities have selected three products (handicrafts, Cat’s claw, and organic coffee) as products they would like to develop and market. CEDIA and PROCAM, partner NGOs, are working with the communities on this matter. A management plan for Cat’s Claw is already in place. The environmental education program has been designed. An innovative conservation model is being developed. Participation, equity and sustainability indicators have been designed and are being applied in the project area. |
