| Description | The proposed Methane Gas Capture Project would provide support to an existing project on solid waste management (Second Solid Waste Management Project [Ln. 3752-ME]) to enable the internalization of the global dimension of landfill gas capture and use. Specifically, the GEF support would be used to provide the financial and technical assistance required to demonstrate self-sustaining modern waste management of municipal solid waste that includes capture and use of landfill gas. The GEF project would demonstrate the technology and lay the foundations for widespread introduction of methane capture and use, as a proven technique in the Mexican market. |
| Implementation Status | Project implementation is highly satisfactory. The Methane plant has been in commercial operation for over a year. It was inaugurated in September 2003. The plant has exceeded the performance indicators (thermal efficiency, power generated, greenhouse gas emissions abated, time on line). By October 1st, 2004, the unit burned 16,642 tons of CH4 equivalent to the abatement of 300,538 tons of CO2 and generated 75,643 MWh. Total disbursements for the project are at 87%. Operation and maintenance has been outstanding. Protocol for control of residues is being applied. The physical appearance of the plant is good. Seven seminars on landfill gas as a source of energy were conducted, including the Workshop at Monterrey attended by an international audience. |
