4th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention

Geneva, Switzerland - from 4 to 8 May 2009

For the first time in the history of the COP, new chemicals will be considered for listing in the annexes of the Convention. A lively discussion is anticipated with nine new substances slated for scrutiny at the meeting. Other key issues are also high on the agenda. Delegates will review measures to reduce or eliminate releases from intentional production and use of POPs, as well as from unintentional production.

Additional matters for consideration include information exchange, technical assistance, effectiveness evaluation, non-compliance and synergies. A ministerial-level segment will take place on 7 and 8 May 2009 under the theme - "Meeting the Challenges of a POPs-free Future".  Click here to visit the official website of the Conference.

As part of the conference the Global Environment Facility (GEF) organized the event " A review of GEF processes and programs in support of Stockholm" on Sunday May 3, 2009.

The GEF has recently introduced a number of changes to its processes to improve its efficiency, including through simplification of the  documentation and steps required for project approval. The  presentation reviewed and discussed the new simplified rules, and provided an overview of the development of GEF programs in the implementation of Stockholm Convention COP guidance.
