The global situation with the spread of COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) is evolving rapidly and is a source of great concern to all of us. We all need to play our part to keep our communities as safe as possible.

With this in mind, the GEF Secretariat remains open for business but all staff are working remotely, and non-essential travel has been suspended. We are making every effort to maintain business continuity in our operations, and remain in close contact with the GEF’s stakeholders through this challenging period.

Faced with the coronavirus, the need to unite and protect our planet has never been greater. This is a pivotal year for the global environment. Decisions taken in 2020 will have far-ranging impacts for the decade ahead. We will not slow down our efforts to deliver on our commitments and support our client governments and other partners. We will be striving to find the appropriate means to continue protecting the planet and promoting a safe space for humanity.

The current situation is clearly affecting the professional and personal lives of us all. But we remain committed to our mission. On behalf of the GEF secretariat, I want to wish you and your families well, and thank you for your continued cooperation in these challenging times.

Naoko Ishii, GEF CEO and Chairperson
