The project is a first of its kind proposal that seeks biodiversity conservation at a globally unique site located in one of the most remote corner of the globe that had remained closed to outsiders until the early nineties. The site has been recently added to the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) -- a multiple use Protected Area, managed by an NGO (King Mahendra Trust for Nature Conservation - KMTNC). A key element of ACAP has been active participation by the indigenous people and decision making in ACAP is mostly taken by indigenous community and major user group.

The project would assist the Government of FYR Macedonia in reducing green-house gas emissions by substituting hydropower for fossil fuels, especially lignite, in power generation. Specifically, the proposed GEF grant would cover the agreed incremental costs of three mini-hydro plants to be installed on the water supply systems of the towns of Kavadarci, Struga and Derbar by independent power producers.

The FSM is a Pacific island national comprised of over 600 small islands and atolls. Separate terrestrial ecological zones exist in the FSM, the ecologically prominent zones being swamp forest, water marshes, primary upland forests and crest forests which comprise of dwarfed vegetation. This project will allow the FSM to formulate strategies and actions to protect and sustainably use its marine and terrestrial biodiversity. The outputs of this project will be a BSAP and a national report to the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity.
