WASHINGTON, June 4, 2015 – A $90 million grant program was approved by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) yesterday for a global partnership to promote investments in biodiversity conservation, preserve wildlife and encourage sustainable livelihoods in Africa and Asia.

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) has engaged in pioneering development of mechanisms that reward good stewardship of natural resources, including the structuring of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) schemes. For the GEF, the concept of PES includes a variety of arrangements through which the beneficiaries of ecosystem services compensate those providing the services. This publication summarizes the investments of GEF in PES from a variety of institutional, thematic and geographic perspectives.

Global illegal wildlife trade has taken a major toll on the world’s threatened species. In Africa, an elephant is killed every 15 minutes. The African Monitoring the Illegal Killing of Elephants program estimates over 17,000 elephants were killed illegally in 2011. The Western black rhino became extinct in 2011 as rhino poaching has increased by 7700% since 2008. According to a tweet by United for Wildlife, there were more football players in the World Cup than Sumatran and Javan Rhinos in existence.
