The United Nations Development Programme developed Targeted Scenario Analysis to address challenges in traditional economic valuation methods and rising demand for practical, policy-focused economic analysis tools to help advance sustainable sectoral development policies and the UN Sustainable Development Goals at the national level.
Targeted Scenario Analysis bridges the gap between decision makers' objectives and economic analysis goals, enabling the conversion of economic data into sustainable sector development policy by applying a range of indicators to compare two policy scenarios: continuing with the historical business-as-usual and shifting to more sustainable policies and production systems. This approach supports better-informed decision making and accelerating policy reform. Targeted Scenario Analysis is a tool supported by the GEF-funded Food Systems, Land Use, and Restoration (FOLUR) Impact Program.
This session explored the connection between policy reform and policy-focused economic analysis, offering an overview of Targeted Scenario Analysis's five-step approach and explored its contributions to policy coherence and decision making, while also sharing examples of results and impact at the national level, lessons learned, value-added, and the global footprint of Targeted Scenario Analysis.
