Facilitating Synergies for Sustainable Development
Multilateral Environmental Agreements and the GEF

Saturday, December 5 2015 | Time: 13:00 -14:30
Venue: Rio Conventions Pavilion (Climate Generations Area)

The session highlights how the Rio Conventions can work in synergy across different domains to help countries achieve sustainable development. Senior representatives from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD), the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and the UN Secretary General’s Office will share their perspectives on opportunities for synergy and integrated action on the ground. The session places a special emphasis on climate change, recognizing its importance as a central theme for sustainable development.

With the adoption of the post-2015 development agenda as embodied in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), countries are increasingly interested in pursuing integrated, cross-cutting opportunities for sustainable development. The 17 elements of the SDGs, ranging from life on land, climate action, zero hunger, clean water and sanitation, to affordable and clean energy, provide a guide for action in key areas that are aligned with the goals of the Rio Conventions.

The discussion will also highlight how and where the Global Environment Facility (GEF), as the financial mechanism for multiple multilateral environmental agreements, can be helpful to countries and partner organizations.
