GEF Programmatic Approach within Biodiversity and Climate Change Focal Areas in West Africa

Ministerial Consultations in Benin


COTONOU, Benin, August 25-26 - The Global Environment Facility GEF has invited Ministers from West African countries to meet in the capital of Benin for consultations on the GEF Regional Cooperation Programme. Monique Barbut, GEF CEO and Chairperson is leading the consultations to take stock of the program development status. During the  consultation,  the program and its priority projects will be reviewed and validated, endorsing the programme framework document and holding discussions related to its submission at the November 2008 GEF Council meeting.

Furthermore, delegates will finalize a roadmap for a rapid implementation of the program, including involvement of donor countries, relevant regional and international organizations, and will consider co-financing issues .

The aim of the programme is to assist countries in the West Africa region in the utilization of the Resource Allocation Framework RAF to enhance the implementation of their biodiversity and climate change policies and programmes. Special emphasis has been given to improving access to energy under the climate change focal area, and to biodiversity.
