The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Secretariat, in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment of Panama, convened an Expanded Constituency Workshop (ECW) for Latin American countries.

The overall objective of the workshop was to engage key stakeholders and enhance awareness and understanding of the latest GEF strategies, programs, and policies. The event provided a platform to share experiences and lessons learned from previous GEF projects and programs, with the goal of strengthening knowledge, building capacity, and informing the design of future interventions aimed at achieving greater impact at scale.

The ECW spanned four days, including one full day dedicated to a field visit to observe local initiatives supported by the GEF.

Specific Objectives

  • Provide participants with up-to-date baseline information on activities financed by the GEF family of funds (GEF Trust Fund, Global Biodiversity Framework Fund – GBFF, and Small Grants Program – SGP).
  • Disseminate information on the GEF’s integrated programming approach, designed to maximize impactful, scalable, and sustainable outcomes.
  • Facilitate the exchange of lessons learned and good practices on cross-cutting themes, including gender equality, stakeholder engagement, and private sector participation.
  • Offer opportunities for bilateral discussions between GEF Secretariat staff, Agencies, and participating countries to review national priorities and adaptively manage GEF portfolios.
  • Deliver targeted capacity-building sessions for GEF Operational and Political Focal Points to strengthen coordination, portfolio management, and strategic engagement.

Participants

Participants included GEF Operational and Political Focal Points, as well as Convention Focal Points for the UNFCCC, UNCBD, UNCCD, Stockholm Convention, and Minamata Convention. In addition, representatives from civil society organizations, youth networks, Indigenous Peoples and local communities, and GEF Agencies were also invited to contribute their perspectives and experiences.
