The GEF National Dialogue in Turkmenistan consisted of two days of national consultations and a project site visit. It convened approximately 45 participants, including representatives of sectoral agencies, convention focal points, GEF project teams, and representatives of multilateral and bilateral agencies active in Turkmenistan. The Dialogue was organized by the Ministry of Nature Protection of Turkmenistan and chaired by the Minister.
The GEF National Dialogue of Turkmenistan was closely linked to and held back to back with two other important national events dealing with environment and sustainable development issues: the National Sustainable Development Strategy planning meeting (13 September 2007), and the Environment and Security Sub-regional workshop (17-18 September 2007).
The main objectives of the Turkmenistan GEF Dialogue were to :
- Integrate GEF themes and concerns within the overall National Sustainable Development planning process being initiated at the same time
- Raise awareness and knowledge of national stakeholders about the GEF, its areas of focus and revised policies and procedures
- Share experiences generated in responding to global environmental conventions and lessons learnt in ongoing projects
- Discuss national priorities in Biodiversity and Climate Change and identify pipeline ideas for development
