DescriptionThe project’s goal is to catalyse the sustainability of Iran’s system of wetland protected areas (WPAs), thereby enhancing its effectiveness as a tool for conserving globally significant biodiversity. The project’s objective is to systematically remove or substantially mitigate threats facing globally significant biodiversity and sustainability at two demonstration sites, while ensuring that the lessons learned through these demonstrations are absorbed within WPA management systems throughout Iran and most particularly at a set of target replication sites. These target replication sites have been defined as the remaining nationally and internationally protected (Ramsar) WPAs in Iran.
Implementation StatusThe project commenced in early 2005, and suffered delay due to high turn over of project managers. The situation is now stabilized and that project is back on track for making steady progress. Integrated management planning workshop was held in Lake Uroumiyeh (LU) with the participation of representatives from different organizations, local communities, NGOs, national and international consultants. The Management Strategic Plan was drafted and distributed among stakeholders for comments. The third Project Steering Committee meeting was held to review the project progress in 2007 and approve the annual work plan of the year. The Steering Committee agreed on the formation of 4 working groups, namely Water Resources Management, Agriculture and Land-use, Biodiversity and Public Participation in LU basin. The first meeting of the Public Participation Working Group was held. A number of TV and press interviews were organized with the local and national media.
