DescriptionThe W-Arly-Pendjari (WAP) complex is the largest and most important continuum of terrestrial, semi-aquatic and aquatic ecosystems in the West African savannah belt, which encompass an area of 3094026 ha. The project goal is the long-term conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity within the W, Arly, and Pendjari (WAP) Parks Complex of Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger. The project objective is that prospects for long-term biodiversity conservation of the WAP Complex have been substantially enhanced according to significant and measurable improvements in key indicators of PA system sustainability.
Implementation StatusA full size project proposal was approved by GEF. A project document is being finalized for submission to CEO endorsement .The project deals with the buffer zones, contiguous to the complex of national parks in Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger, where unsustainable practices by the local population seeking land for cultivation threaten the sustainability of the park system. The full-size project aims at sustainably developing the areas adjacent to parks and sensitizing the communities about land use management issues. Park directors and keepers of the WAP Complex meet regularly to review progress and exchange ideas on outcomes and constraints. Project intervention takes into account in its design all projects so far implemented in the WAP Complex area, including the ECOPAS project from the European Union.
