DescriptionThe Project’s development objective is to accelerate the development and utilization of geothermal resources in the Rift Valley as a pathway to low carbon development in the region. The Program’s global objective is to facilitate reduction of the growth rate of GHG emissions in the region through geothermal energy development to produce electricity.
Implementation StatusThe project is a PDFC phase. The World Bank as co-implementing agency has been conducting an appraisal of the potential sites where the first drillings will be operated as well as preparing the environmental safeguards for the project. UNEP as the other co-implementing agency has established a technical working group with the participation of the co-financiers to finalize the scientific investigation program as well as creating the capacity building procedures. The results of these various approaches will be discussed in a stakeholders meeting to take place in Nairobi at the end of November. It is expected that, on this basis, the final project document will be submitted for GEF CEO endorsement at the beginning of 2008, depending on how the schedule will fit with the WB procedures.
