DescriptionThis project will initiate Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) frameworks in the Pangani River Basin of Northern Tanzania. These frameworks will address climate change and pilot adaptation measures. It is one of the first field-based climate change preparation projects in Eastern Africa with strong links to basin and national planning and policy, and as such will build national and regional capacity, provide lessons and serve as a national and regional demonstration site.
Implementation StatusAfter the original project budget was revised to meet the new requirements communicated by GEFSEC, UNDP Project document was cleared technically in April 2007 and financially in May 2007 and signed by both Government and UNDP in August 2007 to render the project effective and become active initiative under the broader umbrella of the Pangani River Basin Management Programme. In addition to the Government of Tanzania, IUCN and UNDP/GEF, EU-ACP joined under the umbrella programme in April 2007. For UNDP/GEF project, the inception workshop and the 1st Steering Committee meeting is scheduled in November and its preparation underway. Adaptation M&E framework is under development. Work on Environmental Flow Assessment commenced earlier this year through a series of contracts is making progress.
