DescriptionProject formulates technical and economic guidelines and furthers adoption of advanced technologies for small hydro resources in India's hilly region, which should reduce carbon emissions and mitigate deforestation. An integral part of government programme to expand prevelance of non-conventional energy sources, the project uses a more cost-effective design than those of present India plants in this field. The project is an integral part of the MNES Mini-Micro Hydel programme. MNES is seeking an allocation of $292 million from the eighth five-year plan for creating an additional total capacity of 256 MW, of which about 70MW would be in the hilly regions.
Implementation StatusZonal plan for identification of small hydro potential and relevant data has been prepared using latest techniques of GIS, computer modeling etc. during 4th year. This information is already being used by the participating States for the development of SHP projects. Draft Master Plan for the development of small hydro in 13 participating States have been prepared taking into consideration the present level of development and policies in the States. The assessment of present level of latest technologies and World survey of various technologies was completed during the third year. Based on this information, appropriate technologies were selected for the demonstration projects. This was completed during the 4th year. Sites for 20 demonstration projects were identified during the third year and execution of projects have started on 18 sites. 110 water mills with improved designs have been installed. Demonstration of low wattage appliances have been completed at three project sites as envisaged. Base line study completed. Guidelines drawn. Final environment impact study to be undertaken after completion of demonstration projects. UNV is proposed to be engaged. 53 officials from Central and State Government at different levels trained abroad on various aspects of SHP development. Over 150 technical officers trained at National level. AHEC, Roorkee strengthened as apex institution in Small Hydro.
