DescriptionThe trust fund provides reliable recurrent funding for the establishment and management of a national system of protected areas, and development of the institutional and human resource capacities needed to manage the national system. This project is testing the feasibility of a trust fund mechanism for providing long-term, sustainable finance for biological conservation programs in the protected areas.
Implementation StatusAll the project objectives completed ahead of schedule. These include: (i) the establishment of a viable national system of protected areas and gazettement and management of four priority sites; (ii) development of a model management plan and operational plans for each site; (iii) revision of the forestry training curricula; (iv) institutional reforms and strengthening of the forest service to implement conservation initiatives; and (v) the involvement of local communities in the management of protected areas. Commitments and pledges to the trust fund now exceed $23 million, $3 million over the original target. ICR produced 4/2/98.
