DescriptionThe project would be a model initiative for the dual objectives of ofsetting biotic carbon and promotion of sustainable livelihood through participatory approach in combatting desertification. It would sequestor carbon, at a very high level, in the destertified lands of Hosseinababd through the establishment of a hand planted Haloxylon forest.
Implementation StatusIn this quarter, the most important activities were nursery sowing and effort on the extension of UNDP and/or GEF credit share In order to secure extra fund for this project, a meeting was held with the participation of the Head of Forests, Rangelands and Watershed Management Organization (FRWO) and the UNDP Resident Representative. It was decided that the Government counterpart and UNDP will provide add-on budgets to the project in the range of $260,000 and $226,000 respectively. Birjand University has submitted the Monitoring reports to the office of NPD for review. The report is under review by the Technical Committee of the Deserts Affairs Bureau.. Twenty-six Village Development Groups (VDGs) already established in project area have been active in using micro-finance loans for alternative jobs and additional income. These VDGs have 931 members (484 male and 447 female) from 14 villages. During this period, total saving amount of VDGs funds has reached to Rials 139 million (approx. US$15,500) and about Rials 108 million have been allocated in the form of loan to small businesses and consumptive needs from their own saving. Nursery sowing programme of Atriplex Sp for next year plantation has been carried out successfully. Many visitors from UNDP and FRWO and different agencies visited the project site and its activities. The first issue of project newsletter has been published and widely disseminated. A field visit by the new Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP and a team of her colleagues was carried out in June. A meteorological station for recording basic met data including wind speed and direction and evapo-transpiration was established in Hosseinabad nursery. Output creation and financial delivery have been measured against the target levels to have reached 71 and 57.2 percent respectively.
