DescriptionThe project will be designed to help countries operationalize information access and public participation in a manner that advances the goals of reducing toxics and nutrients discharges to the Danube River Basin. As such, the activities conducted in Hungary and Slovenia will serve as a pilot for future efforts to operationalize public involvement in support of pollution reduction in the Danube in other countries in the Danube River basin.
Implementation StatusThe project was completed both operationally (2001) and financially (2003). The submission of the signed Terminal Project report remains outstanding. Following regional initiatives for its continuation in the South-Eastern European region, the implementing organizations of the project (i.e. REC, New York University-School of Law and Resources for the Future) .did already submit a project proposal for GEF funding. The second phase of the project will use experiences of the first phase, this time covering Bulgaria, Romania and some former Yugoslav countries.
