DescriptionThis project aims at the expansion of the protected areas in the Cerrado Region in order to enhance biodiversity conservation, through the implementation of Private Natural Heritage Reserves, involving private owners and NGOs in the area. Project sites are located near the Chapada dos Veadeiros National Park and Grande Sertão Veredas National Park. This project aims at the expansion of the protected areas in the Cerrado Region in order to enhance biodiversity conservation. The project will (i) establish four Private Natural Heritage Reserves (RPPNs) with management plans; (ii) prepare and implement an awareness program in order to disseminate to other landowners and associations the best practices and lessons learned; (iii) prepare and implement an awareness program viewing local communities support in the participation of the RPPN project; (iv) train technical staff from RPPN in protected areas planning and management, and ecotourism development; and (v) establish a RPPN support network, consisting of RPPN managers, NGOs, relevant government staff members and local communities.
Implementation StatusApril-June 2005: The project has reached its overall target and 7 RPPNs were created, five in the surrounding area of the Chapada dos Veadeiros and two at the Grande Sertão Veredas National Parks. These RPPNs Management Plans were finalized and the necessary infrastructure is being built for inauguration by early September. In one RPPN, the nest of a critically endangered species, the Brazilian Merganser (mergus octosetaceus) was found. The project has also assisted other five properties in the GSV area to have their legal reserves established and the documentation is now waiting processing at the State Forestry Institute. Project activities shall terminate by end September 2005.
