Description The project’s development objective is to contribute to the improved sustainable and equitable management of Ecuador’s biological diversity by strengthening the effective management and financial sustainability of its National Protected Areas System (NPAS). The global environmental objective is to conserve and sustainably manage globally important forest and freshwater ecosystems in Ecuador, one of the 17 megadiverse countries in the world.
Implementation StatusProject implementation is Satisfactory. There has been a significant delay in the start-up of the project due to cumbersome procedures for the ratification of the USD 3.6 M Grant Agreement by the Government of Ecuador (GOE) and consequently the processing of the first disbursement. The first disbursement (USD 175,000) became effective on July of 2004. The latest PSR also reported that in spite of this delay, important progress in the development of planning tools such as the general annual operational plan, protected areas annual expenses plans, revision of the Protected Areas Strategic Plan and the initial review of the Protected Areas Legal Framework for the operation of the Protected Areas Fund (PAF), took place.
